From 2010 to 2012, GRA was subcontracted to conduct geoarcheological analyses as part of the Phase I cultural resources assessment of the corridor for a new natural gas pipeline.
GRA coordinated a team of palynologists, sedimentologists, geomorpholgists, archeologists, and GIS professionals to create a comprehensive geoarcheological and paleoenvironmental model of northern Staten Island, the site of an important late Archaic settlement. Geomorphological and paleoenvironmental reconstructions indicated that prehistoric wetlands were well-preserved beneath a cap of 20th century sediments. These wetlands provided a valuable record of the environmental history of New York Harbor, stretching back to the end of the last Ice Age.
